Important Considerations

It Measures Elements, Not Compounds: It can tell you a sample contains calcium and sulfur, but it can't tell you if it's gypsum (CaSO₄) or a mixture of other minerals. The user often needs context.

 

Surface Technique: It only analyzes the very surface of a material (a few micrometers deep), so a dirty or corroded surface can affect the reading.

 

Light Elements: Standard handheld XRF has difficulty detecting the very lightest elements (below Magnesium on the periodic table, like Carbon, Oxygen, and Nitrogen). This is why it can't tell you the carbon content in steel, for which a combustion analyzer is needed.
